Key Responsibilities
- Patrol assigned areas of Ridgeland to deter and detect criminal activity and enforce local, state, and federal laws.
- Respond promptly to emergency calls, including accidents, disturbances, and reports of crimes in progress.
- Conduct thorough investigations at crime scenes by gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and documenting findings.
- Make lawful arrests and ensure the safe handling and transport of individuals in custody.
- Prepare detailed incident reports, arrest reports, and other required documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
- Enforce traffic laws by patrolling roadways, issuing citations, and investigating vehicle collisions.
- Provide assistance to community members, including information, directions, and referrals to appropriate resources.
- Work collaboratively with other law enforcement agencies, fire departments, and emergency medical services when needed.
- Participate in community policing initiatives and public outreach events to build trust and address neighborhood concerns.
- Testify in court as needed regarding arrests, investigations, and evidence collected.
- Maintain equipment, including firearms, radios, and patrol vehicles, to ensure operational readiness.
- Stay current on laws, policies, and best practices through ongoing training and professional development.
Qualifications & Requirements
- High school diploma or GED; college coursework or a degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, or a related field is preferred.
- Certification from an accredited police academy, or the ability to successfully complete a designated training academy program.
- Current state peace officer certification or eligibility to obtain certification in the jurisdiction of Ridgeland.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- U.S. citizenship or legal authorization to work as a law enforcement officer in the applicable jurisdiction.
- Ability to pass a comprehensive background investigation, drug screening, physical agility test, and medical examination.
- Strong knowledge of criminal laws, traffic regulations, and police procedures.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills for reporting, testifying, and interacting with the public.
- Demonstrated ability to remain calm and make sound decisions in high-pressure situations.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to de-escalate conflicts safely and effectively.
- Physical fitness sufficient to perform essential duties, including running, lifting, and defending oneself or others when necessary.
