Position Summary:
This is highly responsible and difficult administrative and public safety work involving the planning, organization, direction, supervision and coordination of the operations of the City of Mableton Police Department. As the inaugural Police Chief for the City of Mableton, the work is performed under the general direction and supervision of the City Manager and Public Safety Director but extensive leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. The nature of the work performed by the Police Department requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain close cooperative working relationships with supervisory personnel in all City departments and Divisions, representatives of other public safety and law enforcement agencies at the local, state and federal levels, local business and industry representatives all Department employees and the general public. Supervision is exercised over the work of all employees in the Police Department.
Essential Functions:
● Plans, organizes, directs, supervises and coordinates the operations and activities of the City’s Police Department, including its patrol, traffic, criminal investigation, juvenile, vice, crime prevention, crime analysis and related operations and activities in consultation and collaboration with the City Manager and Safety Director;
● Meets and consults with representatives of other local, state and federal public safety and law enforcement agencies to coordinate all phases of the City’s law enforcement programs and activities;
● Establishes functional organizational units within the Department and its various Divisions and designates personnel to serve in such units;
● Establishes and oversee implementation of an annual work program defining the objectives of the department’s Divisions within the goals of the City;
● Prepares annual budgets, meeting agendas and various reports for the Department and maintains related records;
● Develops goals, plans and measurements for the identification and evaluation of the City’s law enforcement needs and activities;
● Establishes and implements broad departmental planning and operational policies, processes and procedures in consultation with the City Manager, Public Safety Director and the Department’s command and supervisory personnel.
Requirements:
● Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Criminal Justice, Police Science or closely related field, and;
● Ten (10) years extensive law enforcement experience serving in a command staff role or higher
● Ability to complete certification through the Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training Council (POST) as a Basic Law Enforcement Officer (or the ability to obtain basic law enforcement training certification through Georgia POST within 12 months of hire date).
● Must complete the Georgia Chief Executive Training Class (CETC) (New Chiefs’ School) provided by the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police and required by Georgia State Law in the first session offered after being hired, unless the class has already been taken.
● Possession of a valid Driver’s License issued by the State of Georgia.
Preferred Requirements:
● Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Criminal Justice, Police Science or closely related field, and;
● Fifteen (15) years extensive law enforcement experience serving in a command staff role or higher
● Graduate of the the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy; and/or
● Completion of the Southern Police Institute Administrative Officers Course and/or Northwestern School of Police Staff & Command, and/or an equivalent advanced leadership training program.
